What are kata and kumite in karate?
When watching karate competitions, you will often hear the terms kata and kumite. They are the two main parts of karate training and competition.
Kata
Kata is a fixed sequence of attacking and defending movements performed by one person against imaginary opponents. In competition, judges score it on technique, power, speed, rhythm and balance. Practising kata develops precision, focus and body control.
Kumite
Kumite is sparring between two people. Athletes score 1 to 3 points, depending on the technique, by landing accurate, controlled punches or kicks on the scoring areas. Practising kumite trains reaction, distance and quick decision-making.
Two sides that work together
Kata builds a solid technical foundation, while kumite puts those techniques into practice. Lau's Karate classes cover both, and students may enter kata or kumite competitions according to their interests and their coach's advice.
Lau's Karate Director Lau Chi Ming reached a career-high world ranking of 9th in men's individual kata, and Technical Adviser Grace Lau won the bronze medal in women's individual kata at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Book a trial class to experience kata and kumite for yourself.
