What is the best age to start karate?
One of the most common questions from parents is the best age for a child to start karate. In fact, karate suits people of all ages; what matters most is a class that fits the learner's age.
Ages 4–6: Building interest and focus
Children at this age can already follow simple instructions. Classes focus on basic movements, balance and game-based training, building interest, focus and classroom routines.
Ages 7–12: Building solid fundamentals
Children's coordination and memory improve quickly at this age. It is a good time to learn basic techniques and kata systematically, and to start taking grading exams and competitions.
Teenagers: Taking on higher levels
With more mature fitness and understanding, teenagers can study techniques in depth. Those aiming to compete may join the training squad on a coach's recommendation.
Adults and seniors: It is never too late to start
Karate improves fitness, flexibility and balance, and is a great way to relieve stress. Students at Lau's Karate range from age 4 to over 60.
Whatever your age, the first step is to try a class. Book a trial class and our coaches will recommend the right class for your age and level.
