What is the difference between karate and taekwondo?
Karate and taekwondo are both popular martial arts, and many parents compare them when choosing. Neither is better than the other; each has its own character.
Different origins
Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan, and later developed into several styles in mainland Japan; taekwondo originated in Korea.
Different technical focus
Taekwondo is known for its kicks, and most competition points come from kicking. Karate gives equal weight to hands and feet: punches, open-hand strikes, elbows, kicks and footwork all matter, with every movement precise, powerful and controlled.
Different competition formats
Karate competition has two main events: in kata, one person performs a fixed sequence of attacking and defending movements and is scored by judges; in kumite, two people spar and score with accurate, controlled techniques. Karate was an official event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
What they have in common
Both value etiquette, discipline and perseverance, and both build fitness and confidence. Whichever you choose, what matters most is that your child enjoys it and wants to keep going.
Lau's Karate follows the Shito-ryu style. Our Technical Adviser Grace Lau won the bronze medal in women's individual kata at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. To experience karate for yourself, book a trial class.

Siu Mi's Tip
