How to prepare for your first karate class
Many students and parents feel a little nervous before the first karate class. Preparing is actually very simple.
What to wear?
For a trial class, comfortable sportswear is all you need; there is no need to buy a karate uniform in advance. Karate is practised barefoot, so no trainers are needed. A uniform is required only after you enrol.
What to bring?
Just bring drinking water and a towel.
Before class
- Arrive about 10 minutes early so there is time to change and get familiar with the dojo.
- Trim your nails and remove watches and jewellery to avoid injuries during training.
- If you have an old injury or feel unwell, tell the coach before class.
Dojo etiquette
Bow when entering and leaving the dojo as a sign of respect. Listen carefully to the coach during class, and feel free to ask if anything is unclear.
Once you are ready, book a trial class. Lau's Karate has dojos in Causeway Bay, Kwun Tong and Lai Chi Kok. For the timetable, see the Karate Courses page.

Siu Mi's Tip
Remember to train barefoot, and bow when you enter and leave the dojo!
